Welcome to the Chesapeake
Institute of Anti-Aging Medicine. The field of age
management medicine is evolving quickly as new information
becomes available. Research in prolonging lifespan continues
at a rapid pace though no definite applications to humans
are yet available. However there are many clear ways to
improve our “health span”, the length of good health and
vitality we all seek. We know that as we grow older levels
of important hormones begin to decline. Studies show that
what we think of as aging may in many ways be the result of
decreasing levels of these hormones. Lack of exercise and
suboptimal nutrition also play a major role leading to a
whole host of problems including obesity, bone and muscle
loss, fragility and inflammation. The diseases of old age
such as dementia, heart disease and strokes, diabetes,
osteoporosis and even cancer can be prevented, slowed or
even reversed. Using hormonal replacement and balancing when
indicated along with a good exercise and nutrition program
is the key. Our goal is to provide you with the most up to
date and reliable information and the means to reach and
maintain your optimal health.
Anti-Aging Medicine is not
really against aging. The goal is to slow the aging process.
The decline in hormonal levels occurs in several ways. The
most obvious and best known example is menopause. In her
late forties or early fifties a women’s ovaries eventually
stop producing estrogen and progesterone. This decline is
manifest by multiple symptoms including hot flashes,
decreased energy and libido and difficulty concentrating.
Signs include irregular or no periods, dry skin, vaginal
dryness, rapid bone loss predisposing to osteoporosis and
increased risk of fractures. The risk of cardiovascular
disease and probably diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease is
also increased. We believe that careful replacement of
estrogen and progesterone can help alleviate these problems.
